Alicante is a great city and, like all large cities, at Christmas it is filled with lights, Christmas trees, fairs and a family atmosphere. Not just in the city, but the whole province is filled with festivities and activities to make Christmas special each year. There are so many activities that they flood the municipality. You may ask yourself what there is to do in Alicante over Christmas.
That is why, if you want to immerse yourself in the Christmas culture of the province, the best thing you can do is to take a trip through its towns and villages. If you don’t have a car, remember that Lara Cars provides the best car rental service, with the best collection-return service.
What to do in Alicante at Christmas, the city
Each year in the city, Christmas begins with the setting up of the Monumental Nativity, which is located at the intersection of the Paseo de la Explanada and the Rambla. With sound, lights and figures that are four times the size of a person, this Nativity Scene is on display in Alicante throughout the Christmas festivities, and it does not require any type of entry pass. If you like nativities, you can visit the Nativities Museum or go to one of the many activities organised by the Asociación de Belenistas de Alicante (Alicante Association of Nativity Scene Makers), such as the Nacimiento de la Asociación (the Association’s Nativity) or the Ruta de los Belenes (the Nativities Trail).
If you intend to take something home as a souvenir, you could visit the Christmas Craft Market or the Market at the Paseo Campoamor. Each year, there are also various Christmas and carol singing concerts organised. For the little ones, you may be interested in the Christmas Fair in the Bull Ring, with its ice-skating rink and its North Pole village, or the Alicante Business Initiative, which is full of attractions and inflatables for the children. Imagine their surprise when they visit Father Christmas’ House and they can deliver their letters and wishes in person!
In January, you won’t want to miss the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (the Parade of the Three Kings), with various days of activities, such as the Royal Encampment or the proclamation.
Christmas in the rest of the Alicante province
You can go to El Campello to see its Municipal Nativity display, or to Rabasa, to explore its outdoor Christmas Fair. The Christmas Fair at Elche has a big Christmas tree and an enormous big wheel as well as other children’s attractions.
In Benidorm, if you’re feeling adventurous, perhaps you could take part in the San Silvestre Race or go up to the Serra Gelada or to the Cruz de Benidorm. If you are more of a city person, throughout Benidorm’s historic centre or at the Benidorm Palace you will find all kinds of activities and shows. In Torrevieja, along the Paseo de Vista Alegre, by the side of the beach, you will find a market filled with handicrafts and sweets. Also on the Kings Night (Twelfth Night) each year, the children get excited as they watch the three kings arriving by ship from the East at the port.
