What to do in Pueblo Mascarat: beaches and coves

From the village, you can reach two beaches on foot: Playa Mascarat-Altea and Playa Pueblo Mascarat. These are pebbly beaches with crystal-clear waters; they’re small but usually quiet, offering a peaceful swim. Between the beaches, there is a marina where you can rent jet skis, small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards.

There are also two coves in the area. The lesser-known Cala Barra Grande is easily accessible from the beach and offers a small neighbourhood area with spectacular views. Cala del Racó del Corb has more activities but tends to be busier. It’s a great spot for snorkelling and has a cliff suitable for abseiling.

A perfect summer afternoon plan

Rent a paddleboard or kayak to watch the sunset from the sea. Start your adventure at Playa Pueblo Mascarat, where you can park in a designated gravel lot, then paddle to Cala Barra Grande and take a break to rest or swim. Continue paddling to Cala del Racó del Corb, where you can approach the cliff for abseiling or snorkelling. The last part of the plan is to head back to the starting point and, while anchored, enjoy an incredible sunset with the marina in the background. Finally, head to shore and end your perfect plan with a drink or dinner at one of the two beach bars at Playa Pueblo Mascarat; both have a great atmosphere and good food.

Curiosities of Pueblo Mascarat

The village gets its name from the Barranco del Mascarat, which stretches across much of the residential area and down to the beach. In the past, this gorge made access to the area difficult, so until the late 19th century, it was considered a dangerous place. Its name comes from the Valencian word for masked, “enmascarat,” as legend has it that a skilful bandit once lived there, using the terrain to carry out his robberies.

Since 1868, paths and bridges have been built in the Barranco del Mascarat, which are visible from the canyon. The main attraction is the route through the gorge, known as the Mascarat Canyon, which features a series of passages between the towering stone walls. It’s not a particularly difficult route, and the walls provide shade, but it’s advisable to be properly equipped and travel light.
