This area has an average annual temperature of 18.2 ºC, with an average of 11 ºC in winter and 26.1 ºC in summer. There are 5 volcanic islands off both sides of the sandspit. Beaches at La Manga del Mar Menor belong to both San Javier in the north and Cartagena in the south.
The strip is 21 km long and 100 to 1,200 metres wide, separating the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor lagoon, from Cabo de Palos to Salinas and Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar.
Evidence of human presence date back to the Copper Age, with remains found at Amoladeras beach. Some of these archaeological remains can be seen at the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena.
