6 incredible places in Alicante
As with any other tourist area, the province of Alicante is bursting with well-known places and locations. Santa Barbara Castle in the capital or the Balcón del Mediterraneo viewing platform in Benidorm are just some of the province’s must-see locations. These places are famous for a reason, of course, but sometimes you want to discover some more hidden places or incredible corners of Alicante.
If you are planning a long stay in the province and if you have a hire car to move around freely and follow your own schedule, touring Alicante can be an adventure full of discovery. Get to know the 6 incredible places in Alicante.
Summer islets and coves
Some places are only accessible to the most adventurous, those willing to travel over land and sea to reach the best destinations and take the most impressive photos. For example, hidden behind a huge islet and only reachable by sea, you can find Xàbia Cove, one of those idyllic beaches that looks like somewhere in Thailand or the Azores. Very nearby, also departing from Xàbia, you can find the Descubridor Islet or Portitxol Island, two places that are famous for their underwater diving areas and other sports activities that are organised in their surroundings.
On the coast of Benidorm, hidden within the Sierra Gelada mountain range but accessible by car, is Tío Ximo Cove. This small cove features a shallow bathing area, rocky ground and crystal clear waters. It is not usually crowded and is a great choice for a day at the beach away from the hustle and bustle and noise of the Poniente or Levante beaches. Approximately four kilometres from there, near Villajoyosa, you can find Racó del Conill. It is more difficult to reach, but less crowded. With a long nudist tradition and several snorkelling spots, this small and cosy cove also has a beach bar, about five minutes’ walk away, next to the car park.
Charming villages
They tend to go unnoticed by the masses and especially by Spanish tourists, so there are not usually many people around. You can stroll through their streets and hidden corners, stop at a bar and visit their cultural offerings. For example, the village of Altea, with its semblance of a small village and those small white houses that seem to have been there forever, forming part of the natural landscape. Another incredible place in Alicante, also a village, is Guadalest, named by Spain as a Historic-Artistic Site of Cultural Interest. It has a famous castle and a reservoir with which it shares its name.
Another town full of incredible places in Alicante is Novelda, where you will find the Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena, considered the Sagrada Familia of the town, inside which you will find the only stone organ in the world. You will also find the “casa de la pitxotxa”, La Mola Castle with its Triangular Tower, all in a road trip that won’t take you more than an afternoon.
