Villages with a great cultural heritage
As we have already mentioned, many of Alicante’s villages still have castles, ruins or cultural remains dating back many years. An excellent example is Rojales, where we can find a group of fifteen houses excavated in caves, from around the 18th century, known as the Cuevas del Rodeo. These houses were built by excavating the land, with the extracted stone being reused to create the facades, corridors and staircases that connect the housing complex. They are now owned by the town council, which has taken care of their restoration. They have been handed over to various artists, who have painted, decorated and maintained them, with some caves being used as homes and workshops. This makes Rojales a compulsory stop on any road trip of Alicante’s beautiful inland villages with a hire car.
Another great option is Villena, which lies on the western edge of Alicante, bordering Murcia and Castilla La-Mancha. Villena stands out for its narrow streets and old houses, watched over by a huge castle known as the Castillo de la Atalaya. Villena also has cave houses with craft workshops and a museum containing archaeological collections from the area. The collection features El Tesoro, a set of 66 pieces of prehistoric crockery, of high archaeological value.
