As Alicante is a relatively small province, it can quickly be toured by car. It’s not only faster and more versatile than taking public transport or limiting your trips to a single town, but it is also much more comfortable. Using public transport, you can’t adjust the aircon to your liking, or the seats; and in the long run, it ends up being much more expensive. The most beautiful towns of Alicante
If you are looking for a peaceful holiday, the towns in the province of Alicante may be your best choice. These places are less busy and are a great choice for a quick visit. With a hire car, you can visit a number of these places in a single day.
Apart from various beaches and the odd natural cove, Calpe is a small town that has the Parque Natural del Peñón de Ifach. This natural park is located at the edge of Calpe, surrounded by the sea and crowned by an enormous 300-metre-high crag. This is an easy trekking route for people with a little experience. Climb up to the top of the crag, and if the day is clear, you can see Formentera, Ibiza and the headland of Santa Pola.
Another option is Altea, a small town of steep streets and white houses by the edge of the sea. At the top of the town is the church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo, commonly known as the Cúpula del Mediterráneo (the Dome of the Mediterranean). Not very far from there is Jávea, where you can visit the Parque Natural del Montgó, the Reserva Marina del Cabo de San Antonio or some of its beautiful pebble beaches. Other interesting places are the Old Quarter at Orihuela or the town of Guadalest, a small medieval-looking town located on the high point of a crag with views over a valley.
The Castles Route
Another car hire route around Alicante in winter is the castles route. Alicante has a rich historical legacy to explore, full of big fortifications and incredible castles. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara, in Alicante, is a fortified castle that, even today, appears to watch over the seas of Alicante. You can go right up to its door in your hire car or take a stroll up through the park situated below the castle.
From Alicante you can head to Onil, where the Palace Fortress of the Marqués de Dos Aguas is located, and from there to the Castillo de Castalla, a castle that is unique because of the area it is located in. In Novelda you will find two buildings, the Castillo de la Mola and the Sanctuary of Santa María Magdalena, popularly known as the Pequeña (Little)Sagrada Familia.
