5 hiking routes in the province of Alicante accessible with your rental car

Hiking is an outdoor activity that combines sport with nature and culture. Routes are usually along approved, well sign-posted trails to ensure the safety of hikers.

Hiking is suitable for most people, however some trails are harder than others and require more expertise. Below you’ll find five hiking routes in the province of Alicante that are accessible with your rental car.

SIERRA DE BERNIA TRAIL

The Sierra de Bernia is located near Calpe and Benissa. What makes this footpath special is that hikers have to pass through a tunnel under the mountain, called El Forat de Bernia. Although narrow, it’s worth it, as breathtaking views await you at the other end.

Parts of the trail run over rocky terrain and are also steep in some places, so appropriate footwear is highly recommended. At the beginning of the footpath there is a large parking area where you can leave your car with no worries.

SIERRA HELADA TRAIL

The Sierra Helada trail starts at Benidorm and ends at the Albir lighthouse. This nature park is a coastal protected area and one of the most spectacular on the Costa Blanca due to its incredible cliffs and sea views.

The trail takes about five hours and features steep uphill and downhill slopes. It’s a linear route so it won’t take back to where you started. That’s why people usually leave their car in the car park at the end of the path.

However, hikers may vary the route to adapt to their needs. In addition, no map is needed as the trail is well marked with frequent information panels along the way.

EL HONDO NATURE PARK TRAIL

El Hondo nature park, located between Elche and Crevillente, is a wetland standing out for the diversity of bird species that live there. Its great ecological value makes it a unique enclave that you can’t miss.

This trail runs along large wooden walkways over the lagoon waters, so the path is flat and even. There are two short and easy routes, which makes it an unbeatable option for children or beginners.

CLIMBING THE PUIG CAMPANA

Puig Campana is the second highest mountain in the province of Alicante. It’s located in Finestrat, a town near Benidorm, and is easily accessible with your car as it is very well connected to the motorway and the A-road.

The views from the top are breathtaking, but climbing it is quite a challenge. This is a difficult hiking trail due to its very steep slopes and rocky sections, so it isn’t advisable for those not accustomed to practising this sport.

However, you can take another path and avoid climbing to the top of the mountain. This is an easier option suitable for anyone: a quieter trail with a lot of vegetation.

HIKING TO THE GUADALEST RESERVOIR

The Guadalest reservoir is located in Beniardà and is known as the emerald jewel of Alicante due to the colour of the water that reflects the blue of the sky and the green of the surrounding vegetation.

This trail features two starting points and usually takes about three hours to hike. Be ready for its beautiful scenery and amazing views over the valley and nearby villages. It’s an easy, child-friendly hike that’s ideal for beginners.
